It’s no secret that gaming PCs tend to be expensive. This is to be expected when we look at the price of graphic cards nowadays. You won’t find a good gaming laptop or PC under $500, but if you’re ready to spend a little bit more, then you could find a great machine that will run most games around the $1200 mark. You will still need to be savvy here and make the right decisions so you can optimize the right parts and not overspend on superfluous specs. Let’s take a look at how you can get a great gaming PC at a reasonable price.

Go for a Desktop

Unless you absolutely need to play games on the go, there’s no reason to write off desktop PCs. You can get a much stronger desktop gaming computer for a fraction of the price you’d have to pay for a comparable laptop. Gaming laptops also have some limitations many people don’t consider.

Most gaming laptops don’t have great battery life, for instance. Don’t let the ratings fool you, most manufacturers will exaggerate the battery life on their machines. They often test batteries while running tasks that don’t consume too much energy. But gaming is one of the most energy-intensive tasks that you can run on a machine, so you’ll be lucky to get more than four hours of continuous gaming time on a laptop.

Another disadvantage of gaming laptops is that they are often much more difficult to upgrade, and upgradeability should be a priority for any gamer. Being able to upgrade to a more powerful GPU whenever you want is a great feature to have and will extend the lifespan of a machine.

Get a Used PC

You can also go for a used PC, but this is pretty risky. Ideally, you should look for a reputable retailer in your area that sells used desktops and PCs and offers a warranty. Pawnshops can also be good places since most of them will be willing to offer a warranty on their machine. You can’t expect to find the best machine there, however, and you never know how long your machine will last past their usually very limited warranties.

The worst thing you could do, however, is buy a machine from a stranger. Some of them might be scammers, but, even if the person has good intentions, you simply never know what could happen to the computer later.

Look for Discounts

Another thing you should do is take advantage of any discount you can find. If you want to buy a computer from a specific manufacturer, check out their site to see if they have any kind of newsletter or special club that you can join. Most of them will offer some sort of discount as an incentive for signing up. Look for seasonal sales too. Most gaming PCs are discounted around the back-to-school time and spring, so look for price drops during those periods.

These are all ways that you could cut your costs on your next gaming machine. If you keep an open mind and know where to look you should have no trouble finding a decent machine at a great price.
